In a time where greed seems prevalent and everyone it seems is out for themselves. Feel good stories are hard to come by. Or are they?
Late last month an anonymous woman walked into an Iowa City, City Hall Building and paid her water bill, Then she paid the water bill for 17 other people in Iowa City. According to the Iowa City Press Citizen that anonymous donor forked over $1,640 to pay off delinquent balances to ensure they had running water for the Thanksgiving holiday. 11 of those accounts had their water already shut off… due to unpaid balances , with the remaining six scheduled to shut down by the end of that day.
Last week in San Jose California, Maria Vargas who is battling Stage 4 cancer discovered that someone had left a bag of avocados on her doorstep. Inside that bag of avocados she found also a Cashiers check for $10,000 from an anonymous donor. Her daughter told KNTV in the bay area that Maria Vargas has already spent her entire life savings on cancer treatment this money means that her mother will be able to continue getting treatment.
And it was only a couple of days ago when most Long Islanders came across a heartbreaking story when we saw a little Madison Sabolenko crying on the local news when discovering on Sunday that their house had been broken into, flooded, and robbed of all it’s Christmas gifts. Among the gifts were a missing T.V. an X Box and computers totaling $5,000. It looked as if There would be no Christmas for the Sabolenko Family. That was until Seaford resident John Theissen of the John Theissen’s Children’s Foundation couldn’t let the injustice stand. He not only replaced all of the stolen gifts, He gave the family a check for $5,000 stating “This is something I had to do.”
It should also be noted that over the last several weeks across the country apparently people have been walking into K-marts and Wal-Mart’s and have been anonymously been paying for things that other people have put on layaway. The trend has caught on so much that the Associated Press has comprised a map of Layaway Santa sightings.
According to the world giving index despite global economic turmoil, the world is giving more. And that the United States over the last year has been the most charitable country in the world.
So during this holiday season while our Government is at each others throats and playing the blame game. It’s good to know that the worlds citizens are proving true to the cliché, that in time of crisis people learn to stick together.
